P̓adzas 'Maxwa
'Potlatching Potlatcher'
(Marcus Matthew Justin Alfred)
Marcus was born in 1981 and is a member of the Lawit̕sis First Nation, formerly known as the Turnour Island Band. Along with his Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw heritage, Marcus traces his ancestry to the Nuu Chah Nulth of the West Coast and the Tłingit of Alaska.
Marcus learns the history and significance of the pieces that he carves from his father, Kwamxalagalis (Wayne Alfred). Marcus studies the old masterpieces in the many books in his father’s library. Marcus is a very technical carver, eager to follow in the footsteps of his father Wayne and uncle 'Walas G̱wa̱ʼya̱m (Beau Dick).
Marcus is an avid Potlatcher living up to his traditional name. He is an experienced dancer as well as a gifted singer. He respects the traditional ways of his people and knows many of the ancient stories handed down to him orally.
